According to him, he was left at an orphanage at the age of 3, ran away at 5 after being beaten, and lived all by himself on the streets since then, doing odd jobs and selling gum and energy drinks.
After watching the video twice, and cried twice, I proceeded to read the comments. Amazingly, up to now, 71 people disliked the video. Sorting through the comments I learned that some people thought Sung-Bong Choi was either a fake or a publicity stunt by the network. One thing's for sure though, his voice and talent is REAL.
I always have the impression that the South Korean Population are all well taken care of, either by themselves or by the government. Adding to the 'all is well' scenario are the Korean Drama with line ups of good looking people, not to mention the K-Pop scene.
However, it doesn't take much to get back to reality and discover that hardship is everywhere. Homelessness is a global issue and kind hearted people are doing their part to help and raise the awareness. In his article, "Sociology of the homeless in Seoul, Korea", Daniel Lim began with...
QUOTE "There are approximately 1 million homeless individuals in Seoul, and 300 at Seoul Station, which is a major landmark in Seoul. That’s very intriguing because the population of greater Seoul is 24.5 million people. That means 1 in every 25 people is homeless in Seoul." END QUOTE
It is an interesting observation from an outreach to the homeless done by his group in Seoul.
So, back to our talented Sung-Bung Choi, I will continue to believe that his story is true until proven wrong. I'm sure there are many curious individuals out there who has the time and resources to prove once and for all whether he's real or otherwise.

The reason is because it was revealed that he graduated from a high school in Korea. In the video, that wasn't included and he said that he never had the proper education.

He DID explain EVERYTHING. The editors just cut out that part. But don't worry, many people were mad and the editors were punished.
i was braught up in the mining part of the welsh valleys and on the weekends in the pubs and rugby clubs you would get men singing with butyfull foices and half of them could not read and my father was one but they new the songs just by listening to records and other people singing them you listen to only boys aloud none of those boys have had voice training but they are a wonderfull choir ,so you people doubt this go back and listen to crap sorry rap and leave the boy produce some lovely music
Deletesorry but I doubt he is singing at all, the Italian pronunciation is to perfect for a non native, especially for someone who is supposedly not classically trained. I speak Italian fluently and there was no accent in the vocals, which is always the case with someone who is not singing in their native tongue. the whole thing is nothing more then lip syncing, watch closely and you will see what I am talking about. no proper breathing technique, no moving of the diaphragm to belt out that kind of power while singing, just opening and closing of his lips done poorly and not enunciating the words that are being sung.

I know people from INDIA and JAPAN that speak English with a very noticeable accent but for some reason, they can sing English songs with no issue, as though they were born here. The reason is because they are mimicking every part of the vocal. I also know some Latin and West Indian singers that sing country music with the southern accent without their native accent. Then when they speak they go back to their regular accent.

DeleteI'm an american that lived in korea for a couple years from 2008-2010 and there most definitely are homeless people in korea, while not as much as most countries because korea provides great securities for their citizens however there are homeless people, you'll see them every night at yongsan and Seoul stations.. by the way this story is true and has been extensively investigated..

all in all, it is too good to be true and seems to be taken directly from a very kitschy korean drama. Also, everything was obviously staged: the moderator did just "coincidentally" ask for his family, and he relplies with his whole life story?
And the story has been verified by whom? korean TV? I could't find any source.

Half Korean here. I lived in S.Korea for a total of four years in my youth (Father was career US Army stationed there when he met my mother.) We lived outside of Inchon in one of many little dirty, poor and backwards villages. Half Koreans are considered as 'dogs who eat their own feces' (pronounced Dong Ke ). One step below beggars. People would shout out, 'Dong Ke!' from windows at me while quickly herding their children inside so as to prevent them from playing with a half breed.
DeleteI believe the story of this kid as there are probably thousands like him. The part about being abused also rings true as I can relate to the abusiveness of authority there. There was no lawsuits, no child abuse laws. It's put your head down and do whatever the governing authority says.
I was six years old when I witnessed a few older kids burning trash at a nearby high school. Not knowing they were not students and the fire being unauthorized, I knew not to approach to closely (they would probably have thrown me into the fire if I did). Suddenly, a teacher came out with several students and immediately apprehended me, the only half breed there. I remember him smiling and the students laughing as he grabbed a thick wooden stick and beat my lower legs with it.
We routinely had beggars coming into our village. More often than not, word would spread and everyone would shut their compound gates (typically, three houses shared a front court with one massive gate). No one fed beggars. This kid's story matches the attitudes I experienced there.

The way he behaves is actually very convincing of someone his background. He's had so many bad experiences in his life that he's unaccustomed to emotion, and he's become somewhat jaded and numb. Because if you were in his position, you're never going to survive crying like a bitch all throughout your life. In order to survive, you got to subdue much of your emotions. He's had such a hard life that he's unaccustomed to happiness. He doesn't really know how to react in a happy way nor does he remember how to cry anymore. That's why you see him seem a bit detached while being talked to by other people.
A fake person will show forced emotions and overblown melodrama.

DeleteUm June 12 there are children on the street everywhere all the time. Poverty is a real issue everywhere even in the wealthiest of countries. Unemployment rates are at 25 percent in countries like Spain leaving many parents unable to feed their children. Just go to the nearest city wherever you live and look under a highway bridge and chances are you will find Homeless People. Also I would recommend the book the heart and the fist for anyone interested in learning more about poverty and humanitarian aid.
DeleteGood work detective!! I think there probably were a few hardships for this boy, but not like it is been portrayed by the Talent Show. It is kind of frustrating to have to constantly hear a "backstory" for every talented person alive for their talent to qualify with the public. You hear it all the time on the Olympics, etc. This skier, his mother had a kidney transplant, this ice skater, her cousin has cancer, this basketball player almost drowned as a child. Its like their talent does not just stand alone as a testimony to greatness, it has to be accompanied by some terrible tragedy, or they don't deserve the recognigtion. I hate that!! It should be where you practiced the craft, and got really good at it. And thats it. It reminds me of people who go online and try to get money by saying they are sick with something. It reeks of pandering, soliciting, begging and conning people out of money. Sung-bong Choi would be a great singer, no matter what the circumstances. The Wiki article kind of shows that his hardships were grossly exaggerated. There are real people, who do have these kind of hardships. Using their misfortune to promote ones own self-interest is aprehensible.

It is something that people study their entire lives because they have to learn Italian, they have to learn operatic voice control and breathing. I am afraid that it is probably a publicity stunt of some kind. But I hope he goes far. He has a superb voice.

ReplyDeleteStories like this do sound fake, and it still could turn out that it was some giant hoax...but there is a CNN article someone posted earlier in the comment thread, and Eugene Cho wrote about some creative editing that the show's producers did which made it seem as if the kid was milking it, but actually he told the producers and the audience that he attended an arts high school and about the training he'd received. Unfortunately, as the media often does, they decide they want an absolutely incredible story to be even more incredible, so they manipulate it. http://eugenecho.com/2011/06/07/the-story-and-voice-of-sung-bong-choi/. Since Choi's story has spread worldwide, and with today's fast and easy access to information, if this were a hoax, it is likely that it would have been revealed by now. In any case, it is inspiring.

I was very touched and cried the first time I saw the video (stumbled upon it by accident) but was cynical. The moment I was done, I googled to find out more about his background, suggestions it was all fake and the supposed real story. It led me to some cycnics and some supporters.
So he did go to school after all, had a mentor and life was hard, probably not as hard as they sensationalised it out to be in some foreign publications that I read. Before you say I am not compassionate towards orphans, the homeless or the impoverished, I am.
Btw, I saw no point in the actress's question about leaving his family's information field blank. It was almost like she was leading him to say he is an orphan. I know that was part of the script
His is nevertheless a great PR angle no matter how you look at it. Maybe the fact that the TVN network withheld his education and training cost him some votes, we wouldnt know...
They were cross at being deceived. But what would YOU have done if you were in the TV network's shoes?

We had a smiliar situation long ago in apartheid South Africa: one of the municipality garbage collectors, a "coloured" man, sang opera while working. A white woman heard him and helped him to get real training. He is a professional opera singer today. I quote this from the archive: "In the Cape a white woman discovered a native garbage man who sang opera like Pavarotti. She convinced the city opera house to let him perform for one night, bought him a tuxedo and had his hair cut. The news showed him singing as he worked the truck, the sound of dumping garbage crushed behind the tenor. We were all amazed." It is possible to sing like that without training: People with talent watch and listen and do what they have to do.

There are homeless kids living in the street at 5 and under even in the U.S. For those who are sheltered & live a comfy life, do some real research, open your mind & heart, grow up. Life does not stop at your low level of understanding. Just because you have never experienced something & don't understand it, doesn't mean it's fake. There's a whole world out there. Be positive & enjoy his beautiful voice. Maybe if you had actually listened to his voice & not been looking at his teeth, you would've gotten something good out of his performance. Listen to his interview on how he discovered Choi's state of living and got help for him via Children's fund. Pak's church also helped him from age 14!!!

My wife does not think she sings well. She sings VERY well. I'm a musician, play about a dozen instruments, and I don't think I sing well. People tell me I do. When musicians or singers perform, they hear every mistake they make. The note I hit was half a step off, etc. We hear our flaws. People hear our value. It's called humility. Nobody is harder on a person than themselves. His voice is real. His audition hit a couple of slightly sharp notes. He improved as he went along. He was not a professional at the beginning. He improved tremendously at the end. I saw the growth. Not fake

If you watch the audition, have you noticed that while he talked, there was a musical score of nella fantasia playing along with his story. That means we did not hear the audition when he sang it. There was post production work. Musical background score, careful editing, judge interviews at end. That means it was set to attract viewers and ratings. BUT it wasn't fake. If you at the judges' faces, his eyebrows went up and he raised his eyebrows. The middle judge had a look of confusion and unbelief. The right judge held it together the longest. The audience cried, the judges cried, I cried. That powerful voice out of that small body enraptured all. Even though he didn't win the competition, I promise you, record companies competed for him. And he deserves it all. Even with the possibility of voice training, that will not guarantee that much quality

And I do believe the orphanage treated him badly. because I myself is a Korean, and I lived there until 2 years ago. I remember driving past an orphanage, and the kids looked.. kinda beaten. What pisses me off about people is the stupidity they often have that they're going to call on something without actually doing a bit of research first.
ReplyDeleteI myself am skeptical of Sung Bong Choi's story, but I didn't unequivocally call it real or fake until after I researched first and verified that it is indeed fake.
And then I found out that it's real. But other people called it fake for the flimsiest of reasons.

I am a naturalized citizen from Seoul Korea. I remember to this day eating dirt because I was hungry and I have very good teeth btw (response to the post that his teeth were too good). Life is not easy for those like me and Ji-Seung (the name he prefers) that are deserted by our parents. I was blessed that I was adopted by an American family so my lifecwasnt near as hard as Ji-Sung but my memories have done their damage. Thank you God for gracing this young man with such a beautiful voice and may he find comfort in the joy he gives us all.

ReplyDeleteI just discovered his audition video earlier. Very heart-touching. I was teary. I tried to search if he'd won the finals and stumble upon this article if he's fake. Well, we can see he's emotionless when interviewed. For more than a decade of hardship, of being homeless, I think he's emotion has been already dried out. I believe he's real. May he be a good inspiration for hopeless people out there.
ReplyDeleteI watched some interviews on Youtube and had a better understanding of his past. CNN, ABC, BBC all showed places he wandered around for 10 years including public bathrooms and night clubs where he slept and sold gums/ energy drinks. He wrote a biography and said about 100 pages are from people who witnessed his past. People simply couldn't believe his story, so he had to bring many witnesses. In one interview, hosts asked him how he learned singing and received education. He said one day he saw a classical music singer belting out in a night club. He sounded so great that Choi was totally captured by the voice. It was unusual that a classical vocalist sang in a night club wearing a nice suit, but it grabbed his heart. After that, he wanted to learn how to sing classical music, so he went to a kind of school where college students volunteer to teach for free. He looked up 'classical vocal teaching' on Internet and found a name ' Park Jeong So'. He didn't have means to contact him (no money, no phone), so he just went to see him in person. Park was a music student at that time. Choi, growing up without parents or knowledge on how things work, just asked Park if he could teach him singing. He didn't know he should pay for voice lessons and didn't have money. Park, just became a Christian, couldn't believe Choi at first, but there was something honest about him. Choi showed Park places where he spent last 10 years and Park found out everything Choi said was true. Park's church pastors and congregation helped him go to school. But Choi still had to work early morning while in high school to make living and paying tuition. One day, he fell from high building and broke his leg at work. He seriously wanted to commit suicide but his vocal teacher, Park, encouraged him to enter Korea Got Talent. He didn't want to try, but after strong encouragement from Park, Choi entered the talent show, and the rest is history. He said he hated to tell his story on the show. He just thought he would sing and that's it. But producers told him he should tell his story.
ReplyDeleteThe interview I watched tells the whole story. His honest and down to earth personalities shined through the entire interview. It was heartbreaking when I heard that trusting someone is hard to come by on the street life. He would trust someone and that person sold him to another. Adults forced him to drink alcohol or drug in exchange for buying gums. You would never imagine a life on the street for almost entire life. I only hope happiness and success in his future. He said he had lived with no money, so he doesn't know how to manage money when he has it. I could go on and on, but I just want to tell you that his life is beyond our imagination.
Choi's story does not pertain to the millions of people in the world who are homeless or are living in a difficult condition. It pertains to his exemplary life-condition which is not only inspirational but is also a lesson to all of us who have a nice shelter, a wonderful family and a fixed salary every month and yet begrudge our lives instead of being grateful for all that we have.... ReplyDeleteI spent 2 years in South Korea,there is alot of places over there with homeless people.I saw it firsthand traveling in the country.When I was there the average household income was $125.00 amonth.I was in homes with no heat ,running water or power.......................David USAF RET...........
ReplyDeleteim an american with a korean background. if a story of this magnitude and public interest was a fake it would been dug out ? u guys seem to be blinded from all the kpop and kdramas thinking korea is a rosy country, well for most parts its not! there are homeless (starting from babies) which there is no system in place to help them. believe what u want from ur small minds but dont start spreading it like its fact
ReplyDeleteKid had a tough life, he made it, I wish some of you people who don't know the value of life and have everything, but still have a pea for a brain who alway troll, and hate other, should be put in their shoes, prob. Won't last , prob die in a few days, let stop the hate, and work together to better this world, so many greedy ass out there, look at yourself in the mirror.. The kid went thur a lot. Damn if it was me, I would of die, yup, that tough. But the is harsh, he not the only one, we are human we survive.
