Apology

.
Thank you, friend of mine
For you have gave me time
You looked beyond my crime
The good, you let it shine
The bad, you left behind

I learn to toe my line
I yearn to see the sign
Hurt, it makes us blind
Regret, it clouds my mind
Forgiveness is so divine

My plea is genuine
My hope is you be kind
I seek for no rewind
I offer no design
Just wish that we be fine...

Sung-Bong Choi, For Real?

As I watched the video of 22 year old Sung Bong Choi on Korea's Got Talent Ep. 1, my tears started to accumulate and trickled down my cheeks.  He's got an amazing voice but that's not the reason I cried.  It was because of his background, which made me believe that hope comes before salvation and triumph. Oh, and also because of the two female judges, they cried real good.

According to him, he was left at an orphanage at the age of 3, ran away at 5 after being beaten, and lived all by himself on the streets since then, doing odd jobs and selling gum and energy drinks.

After watching the video twice, and cried twice, I proceeded to read the comments. Amazingly, up to now, 71 people disliked the video.  Sorting through the comments I learned that some people thought Sung-Bong Choi was either a fake or a publicity stunt by the network.  One thing's for sure though, his voice and talent is REAL.

I always have the impression that the South Korean Population are all well taken care of, either by themselves or by the government. Adding to the 'all is well' scenario are the Korean Drama with line ups of good looking people, not to mention the K-Pop scene.

However, it doesn't take much to get back to reality and discover that hardship is everywhere.  Homelessness is a global issue and kind hearted people are doing their part to help and raise the awareness. In his article, "Sociology of the homeless in Seoul, Korea", Daniel Lim began with...

QUOTE "There are approximately 1 million homeless individuals in Seoul, and 300 at Seoul Station, which is a major landmark in Seoul. That’s very intriguing because the population of greater Seoul is 24.5 million people. That means 1 in every 25 people is homeless in Seoul." END QUOTE

It is an interesting observation from an outreach to the homeless done by his group in Seoul.

So, back to our talented Sung-Bung Choi, I will continue to believe that his story is true until proven wrong. I'm sure there are many curious individuals out there who has the time and resources to prove once and for all whether he's real or otherwise.

In the meantime, grab a tissue and click play.

Problem Solved with Nokia DT-28

.
I have been depressed about my 4 year old phone because of it's charging difficulty. It's been bugging me for almost three months now and I've bought two batteries so far, with one non-original battery recently destroyed due to frustration... Batteries and chargers are affordable, but phones are expensive. I'm not ready to buy a new phone.

It used to be able to charge with a nudge at the plug point but today it wouldn't charge at all. Imagine the frustration of trying to charge your phone when you need it the most.  Let alone the fact that your phone is always half dead. Imagine charging your phone before bed only to find it dead stiff in the morning...

I was thinking of ways to charge the battery externally. I even thought of hacking an old nokia phone to perform a jump-start using hard wiring... until I googled 'stand-alone nokia charger'. They call it desk top charger.

I found out that there is such product. Haha... ignorant me. Heck, I've been so used to charging my phone directly that I am completely unaware of the existence of this life saver.

So I eagerly went to Digital Mall Section 14 and asked three phone sales booth till I found DT-28, which cost only RM20.

JOY!

Doesn't it look pretty?  It comes with multiple jack inlet for whatever charger you're currently using, provided your charger is functioning of course. The wall mount charger or USB cable is not included.

One Charger to rule them all...
(not my picture or batteries, it's just nice to see)
Desktop Charger Compatible : ALL Nokia Phone Battery Code BL-4C/ BL-4B/ BL-4CT/ BL-4S/ BL-4U/ BP-4L/ BL-5C/ BL-5B/ BL-5BT/ BL-5CT/ BL-5F/ BL-5K/ BL-6C/ BL-6F/ BP-6M/ BP-6MT and more.

Now I can sleep better at night.  And when the morning comes, I'm all charged up and ready for the day.

So the next time you have trouble charging your Nokia even after buying a new battery or charger, get DT-28, it really saves you the heartache.

'Veriffy My Account' scam on facebook

.
Scammers and spammers are on the prawl again.  Beware if a friend sends a post on your wall telling you to help prevent spam by verifying your account.  Don't click to verify because you will not help prevent spam but actually help spam and scam your friends unintentionally.  And that sucks big time.

Study the screen capture below.  Click on the picture to zoom in and see where your click will actually bring you. Look at the bottom of the screenshot and you'll notice creepsweepers somewhere in the javascript code.

Don't worry about clicking the picture, it's not spam or scam, just trying to spread the awareness. Do share this to stop the spam instead. God knows how much other information it is able to 'extract' from your poor computer.

Facebook reveals everything about you-if you let it

.
Yes, only if you let it.

If your life revolves around facebook, you might want to take a step back and reconsider the type of  information you put on your info page, your wall and your photo albums. Even your friends list tells a lot about yourself.

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange considers facebook to be 'the most appalling spying machine that has ever been invented'. Assange calls Facebook "the world's most comprehensive database about people, their relationships, their names, their addresses, their locations and the communications with each other," and claims Facebook may allow the government to gather details without a subpoena.

I quite agree with Assange. Read the article here.

We may be forgiven to get really personal and intimate with our facebook profile.  We post everything from our love and admiration toward someone and professing our hatred and political views for the whole world to see. But all that is done knowing exactly just that. It's public. And that is what we should be reminding ourselves every now and then.

What we consider general information about ourselves now may be privileged and extremely private ten years on, depending on where we end up then.

But then again, considering that our lives are very much connected even in real life, there is no stopping anyone from digging our horrid past, should there be any.  Not even Assange could hide from that irony. And as invincible as Taib may appear, his ugly past have been continuously exhumed  from deep within.

Therefore, looking from the perspective of expose and a 'need to know' policy, all we need to do as simple netizen is be true to ourselves, be honest, sincere and humble.

Unless you work in the intelligence agency and your very existence is designed with lies and deceit, you're basically safe.

Talking about being safe and staying safe, do remember that whatever you post online may be used against you and your loved ones in real life.  Life on facebook is no different compared to life in the real world.  Since you have decided to get personal, it doesn't matter which network you choose to belong to, you still have to respect people's boundaries and feelings. It's easy to overlook the fact that our friends get notified of everything we do on facebook. Yes, there is the privacy setting but sometimes we forget to adjust the setting or we simply don't know.

And don't even get me started about the viruses and scams on facebook. Click with care will ya.

And friends, there are ways to hide unwanted news and updates if they irritate you; you can even block and remove as you like. That includes myself.

Hmmm... how we wish we could easily do that in real life.

To stay safe offline is to be safe online.

Osama Death Picture & Video Post Is Fake-Clickjacking Scam

Dear friends, please take note that unscrupulous scammers are at it again. This time they're using the latest sensational news-Osama Shot Down video 'Leaked by Wikileaks'. And today, I got the picture post to add to the insult.

They're all fake and it hurts you more than you think.  Once you click the link, it will proceed to tag your friends on your list and spread the virus like wildfire.

It's all in the editing.  No picture was released by the White House. The picture series above clearly shows the before and after photoshop or whatever software they used to edit Osama death photo.

The video post is a scam. The post was so hurriedly made that the sentence contains grammar error.  But it's really funny to note that 'Osama is dead' and 'censored by Obama' in the same sentence.  Just replace B for S in the names... That's a big Bull Shit.

Now the picture post is also a scam. "See picture of bin Laden dead!" says the link. "This will leave you speechless" indeed. Speechless because once you click, the virus does all the work for you and helps itself to your friends list for a hundred bite or two.  Like vampires and warewolves.

Who knows how much information it would be able to extract from your computer. Tell your friends. Share this alert.

All about the Royal Wedding

.
My morning drive to work today was blasted with the Royal Wedding 'everything' of Prince William and Catherine Middleton. Every radio channel I flipped registered the words 'Royal Wedding'. I've heard friends talk about wanting to catch the event on Astro and online at Youtube. Even the Star paper had several pages dedicated to it. I've not talked about it yet because it doesn't seem to concern me.

But now that my ears have been bugged and my thoughts diverted, I've decided that it's time to learn more about the whole shebang.  The live telecast is, after all, scheduled at 3.30pm Malaysian time.
Here's what I learned from BBC, yeah, where else would you look for news about everything English.

The Schedule
The guests will begin to arrive at the abbey at 0815 BST. However, first members of the Royal Family - Prince William and his best man Prince Harry will only arrive after two hours. That's a long wait, albeit royal.
According to the confirmed wedding timings, the marriage service will begin at 1100 London time, or 7pm Kuala Lumpur time. An hour and a quarter later Prince William and Catherine Middleton will emerge as a married couple and take a carriage procession to Buckingham Palace.

The Seating
The wedding gathers 1,900 guests in Westminster Abbey, including 46 foreign royals, the prime minister and members of the cabinet and the armed forces. Take a 360 degree tour of the abbey.
Other members of the Royal Family and Middleton family, friends like David and Victoria Beckham and other diplomats from around the world are seated according to the arrangement shown here > Seating plan.

The Route
Shortly after midday in London or about 8pm Malaysian time, following the wedding ceremony at Westminster Abbey, William and Kate will travel in an open carriage past crowds of well-wishers to Buckingham Palace. They will go in a procession past many of London's best known landmarks.
Explore the route on the map of the royal wedding route or if you want a little flavor of how it just might feel to be in the procession itself explore the route on video.

The Broadcast on youtube
The whole world can follow the Broadcast on youtube here > http://www.youtube.com/user/TheRoyalChannel
The broadcast begins at 5pm Kuala Lumpur time. People can upload their congratulatory video messages there too.

The Wedding Wish
So, I guess it's not too late for me to say "Congratulations Prince William And Catherine".

In Bahasa remix, "Putera William dan Catherine, Kongratulasi...!"
Marriage is like mango lassi.  Jangan tunggu lama-lama, nanti basi.

Virus tags friends on facebook picture

No, I don't want to view who viewed my profile on facebook.  Who cares if people view my profile on facebook. Hundreds of people see me on the street while I drive, get lunch, send my laundry, get dinner and run errands.

What difference does it make to know how many people viewed my profile on facebook? Does it give me points? Do I get to redeem cash or kind with those points?

No?

So stop persuading me to see who viewed my profile and how many times, you stupid virus!

And people, please stop clicking on the links which don't even look like a valid web address. They're all clickjacking scam virus.  Yes, they bring you somewhere but you'll get infected along the way...  What is http://is.gd/OXLYES/327485   and shit like that anyway...

He touched me and I'm never washing my hands

.

This sounds so wrong coming from a 12 year old girl, splashed on page N10 of the Star.  Online article here He touched me

As I caught a glimpse of the headline, I thought "who has molested a child this time around. Such a sick country."
When I read on, i went like 'cheh... they couldn't come up with  a better headline meh... '

Ask "Where did he touch you" and 12 year old Bi-Anne would definitely raise her right hand and grin.

Oh, the fever of Justin Bieber.
.

Beware "Tagged you in a post" Facebook Clickjacking Scam

.
There's a new clickjacking scam going on in facebook.  It's got most of my friends.

Click-jacking is done with a seductive link posted with statements like "Justin Bieber Caught Naked on the Beach" or "Japanese Tsunami brought whale crashing into a building" or "Lady Gaga fall off a piano while performing on stage".

Most of them are attached with curious pictures. Once you click on the picture or link, it will update your status saying you 'like'd a link. When your friends see your status, they would be curious and do the same.  It's like wildfire. It's like nuclear reaction! It's viral!

The latest clickjacking is done with notifications telling you "Your friend tagged you in a post" and "see who viewed you profile" written on the post.

When you click on the notification marked "Scam" as in the picture above, you's be taken to the post. Most of the times, "your friend would have removed the post and you'd get an error.  However, as you are tagged by a few friends, those notifications get shown on your profile page.

The post tells you how many times you friends viewed your profile.  Notice the numbers are the same. 1764, 1492, 1206, 1088 and 991.  Only the names change.

This means they got hold of your personal information as soon as you click on the link provided after the words, "see who viewed your facebook profile". After that, the virus takes over and tags most, if not all you friends, four at a time.

Whatever you do, DON'T CLICK! Remove the post as soon as you see it.  Because even if you did not click on the link, friends who view your profile would get curious and click the trap.

Please share this to you friends and stop this deceiving 'virus'.

Celcom Broadband keeps disconnecting

I have been blessed with good connection ever since I signed up with Celcom RM48 package the day I landed in Miri, Friday 15 April 2011.  The startup kit cost RM88 which comes with a free modem, but somehow I doubt it's free.

The good connection enabled me to keep myself updated with facebook and many other portals serving news about the big election in Sarawak. I even managed to upload a few video clips for updates in macambagus.com
All post from 15 April 2011 till now were made possible with Celcom Broadband RM48 pack.

I was very impressed with the whole 'keeping connected deal' that I almost wanted to harp about how stable and decent celcom broadband is at RM48 per month on facebook and this blog.

I'm glad I procrastinated because Celcom Broadband is giving me hell today.  It disconnects every 5 minutes. It disconnects so often that I got used to checking the connection and clicking the connect button every time I intend to click a link.  Sometimes clicking once doesn't solve the problem because it fails to Authenticate. I had to  retry several times to stay online.  Urgh...

It pisses me off to have to Authenticate every 5 minutes!

I really hope it's because today is Sunday and there's not enough technicians on site. Otherwise I'm going to really get my money back.

Name your bird

"Dude, got any updates on macambagus.com?" asked Dency, my bidayuh friend studying in US. Dency is doing her PhD in Ornithology, bird study.

"Not yet, but I'm working on it" I told her.

"I enjoyed your post about you being the YB. Gave me a good laugh, something i need right now. I'm cracking my head trying to memorize bird names" she tells me.

"Haha, good thing you don't have a bird of your own.  That would add one more to your long list. What would you name your bird, if you had one?" I asked her.

"Penisa Spermadia, that's the name" she instantly replied.

"Ouch.  But lovely name.  Quite feminine I must add."

"Penis and Sperm. You like?" she added.

"Haha, yeah, I know where it came from, penis and sperm.  But you must include Testicurly, the twins" I told her.

"Okies.  Penisa Testucilla. Sounds nice.  Quite masculine" said Dency.

"Ahaha.. Penisa Testucilla Spermadia, not SpermaSaya"

"Wow, they even come with sub species. Penisa Testucilla Spermadia. In this case, there's a third name, so it denotes a subspecies" Dency explained.

Wow. I learned something new today. Thanks Penisa.

My steamy drive to work

It was a regular Monday morning as I left house for work this morning at 8am.  The traffic in front of Phoenix Plaza was kind and I swiftly made my way to the fifty sen toll of Bandar Tun Razak.  The regular jam was there, right at the toll up to the convergence at Mid Valley.

Ten minutes into the stop-and-go routine of moving a few inches a minute, I notice my air conditioning was not behaving like it should.  I was running as a fan. I tried to turn the switch on and off but nothing changed.
"Time for her regular check up and service at the workshop" I thought.

A few minutes later I saw smoke coming from under the hood.
"Shit! My car is smoking!"

Thank God I was still by the Petronas petrol station.  I quickly flicked the indicator and made my way through five lanes.  I reached the petrol station ground in less than five minutes. 'Any longer than that my car would have caught fire', I dreaded.  Thankfully, people were kind enough to give way.  Heck, with that kind of smoke, no one dared to be near me for fear of fire and explosion.

I parked at the bays behind the station and took a look under the hood.  The radiator reservoir was boiling, hissing and steaming!  The radiator fan was not running! Damn! No wonder the air conditioning was not working.

I decided to hang around at Petronas station to wait for the jam to clear and then look for a workshop nearby.

Now I know why the air condition was not running properly since yesterday, on my way back from Penang.  I remember when I stopped at a petrol station with the engine was running, the air condition did not function.  Then when I continued the journey, it was cool again.  Thank God I made it safely at 8.30pm last night.

This means that the radiator needs cooling, either by the fan or by air flow while the car is moving.  You'd say 'duhh' but that also means I can still drive to work as long as there is no stalling.  As far as waiting at the traffic light is concerned, I'll just turn off the engine till it's time to move again.

Yeap, that's the plan.  There's a workshop at my office area.  I'll drop my car there and walk a few blocks more to work.

Ah... the road must be clear now.  It's 10.30am.  Everyone's at work already.  Time to go.

Paranormal activities in my bedroom

When it comes to stories of ghostly encounters, I’m not a fan.  But when the encounter originates from the place where I stay or work, I’m not amused.
I’m spooked stiff. Well, at least that’s my immediate reaction. After a while the hair behind my neck falls back to place and I thank God for his mercy which delivers me from evil.

The most recent encounter was several weeks ago when a few friends came to stay overnight at my place.

We were chatting away in beds laid on the floor side by side in my room.  The lights were turned off.  One friend was browsing his Nokia N series when he noticed another friend beside him (right side) suddenly got up, walked towards the window in front and disappeared. He couldn’t believe his eyes so he turned to look to his right to see if that friend was still there.  He was.

He slowly described the incident and we all got really spooked. He also added that he has the talent to see ghosts and spirits sometimes and told us it runs in his family. His dad has a more acute sense.  Needless to say, we helped ourselves to a series of ghost stories after that. Bad idea, I know.

A few hours later, three of them woke up and accompanied each other to the toilet.

‘Damn’ I thought.  ‘They left me behind!’

He didn’t sleep in peace that night.  I noticed him turning side to side. That disrupted my sleep as well.

The next morning, when I sent him to the train station at 7am, he asked me if I slept well. I said no.

“Me too. Your room really has ghosts. I saw them” he said. “I haven’t told the other two yet” he continued. The other two were still sleeping in my room.

I almost hit the brakes but instead screamed ‘What?’

“You better be kidding because I sleep alone in that room! I have had spooky nights but I haven't been directly disturbed for more than two years in that house!” Yes, I have housemates but they sleep in the other rooms.

“I kid you not. When we all got up to the toilet last night, I thought I saw two figures in the living room. Then as we laid back in bed, two entities suddenly jumped over from your side; over you and onto me, and pinned me down” he started.

“No f@kin way…! Male or female? Did you see their faces?” I asked.

“Both male.  One taller than the other.  I saw their faces alright.  They looked like your age, with spiky hair. They were grinning and laughing as they pinned me down.  They even spoke to me.” He explained.

“F@k! What did they say?” I asked.

“They said ‘how dare you told them about us’.”

“Oh f@k You have got to be kidding me!” I cursed as I got huge goose bumps and my face felt thick.

That same day I posted the story on facebook and got some relief from friends saying there are scientific explanations to the experience of being pinned down during sleep. Futrhermore, my friends were telling ghost stories that night. It could be a resulting nightmare.
But then again, the two entities might have dropped by when they heard the ghost stories and decided to have some fun with him.  You know, like ghosts on patrol, hovering around the condo area in the wee hours of the night. Yeesh…!

One of my housemates saw my posting on facebook and told me that he also has the talent to see ghosts.  However, to my ultimate relief, he told me that he thinks the house has no lingering spirits or entities. He didn’t encounter any when he first moved in a few months ago. Neither has he come across any thus far.

Phew…

I’ll tell you stories of ghostly encounters by my colleagues in my next post. The best part is, the noises all came from my workstation and an unoccupied table beside mine!

Japan quake damaged internet cables, internet sluggish

People have been talking about the internet connection like they are talking about the weather lately. In Malaysia, instead of asking "Dah makan?", people are starting to greet each other with "internet getting slower lah..."

Some even update their facebook status or tweet "screw TM" or "Celcom Chee Bye Broaband" or "Digi Bodoband". Especially those who have pictures and videos to upload, which cannot wait.

Coincidently, everyone is also talking about the 8.9 earthquake in Japan, the resulting tsunami and radioactive clouds.

Can't we all calmly connect these two dots together?

Japan is after all one of the resource of everything high tech.  When something bad happens there we can't just say "God be with the people of Japan", turn around and immediately curse at the sluggish internet speed; pretend there's absolutely nothing wrong with the rest of the world.

I know many have been trying to figure out why the internet has become so slow.  Why facebook has not responded as fast as it should. How does everything relate to the 8.9 Japan quake.

Thankfully and timely, the answer is available.  Just type the right words on Google and you'll get some leads. Here's one.

http://gigaom.com/broadband/in-japan-many-under-sea-cables-are-damaged/

Hopefully we all would stay calm and stay compassionate towards those in need.

We live on the same Earth.  We are all in the same boat.

Anne of St. Anthony

I lingered around after the afternoon BM mass in St. Anthony Pudu ended at about 1.30pm on Sunday. It was nice to see things settle down at the church after mass, as people rush to their cars and leave for lunch.  There were several youths having a short discussion at a corner.  I watched as the church grounds get cleared so that it was easy for me to drive out.  My car was parked at one of the church side entrance.

As I slowly got into my car and reached for the door to close it, an elderly woman appeared beside me.

“Are you going to KL? My grand daughter and I are heading to Petaling Street to get some things and then we’d take a taxi home” She asked.

“Petaling street is very near from here. I can take you there. Get in” I told her.

“Oh thank you.  Very gracious of you.  I’ve asked many people but most of them are heading the opposite direction; Sungai Besi they said.” She explained.

“Where is Sungai Besi anyway?” she asked as she gingerly sat herself in the car after putting her 10 year old at the back seat. She could be 12.

“It’s toward Seremban” I replied.

“Thank you again.  You’re so kind.  I wanted to attend the morning mass this morning but my daughter couldn’t send me.  So me and my grand daughter made our own way to the afternoon mass. But I had a fall on the way here. My legs, they are not as good as they used to be. I would just walk to Petaling Street if it wasn’t because of my slightly injured leg” She explained.

“That’s okay. Petaling street is very near. Are you sure you can walk around in Petaling Street? Your leg doesn’t look so good. Where do you and your grand daughter stay?” I asked her.

“We stay in one of the low cost flats in Bangsar.   If you don’t mind you could graciously take us there as well.” She asked.

“Seri Pahang Flats right nanny?” said her granddaughter with delight.

“Yeah, sure.  I know Bangsar quite well. But you have to show me where exactly is the place. Didn’t you say you have things to get in Petaling Street? Do you still need to go there first?” I asked.

“No, it’s okay.  I’m not in a good condition to walk anyway. Let’s just go straight to Bangsar, thank you, you’re so gracious” she said with a big appreciative smile.

“Yeah, that’s a good idea. You need to rest your legs” I said.

“My name is Anne by the way, what’s yours?”

“Agustus, people call me Agus”

“Very nice of you Agus.  I’m so grateful for you”

“I like the Bahasa mass.  The songs are nice and the choir group makes it so lively.  The congregation is so alive and responsive. Unlike the English mass. Very dull.  The people don’t really interact.  During the Bahasa mass, they really turn around and wish you peace like they mean it. That doesn’t happen during the English mass” she explained

“Really? I didn’t know that” I responded.

“I just love going to church. My week is not complete if I don’t go to Church.  I leave everything to God and trust that he answers my prayers. He  will show me the way” Anne said.

“Agus, you’re from Sabah, Sarawak or Indonesia?” she asked.

“Sarawak”

“Oh, that’s nice. I have many relatives married to Sarawakians. Did you know there’s a banana leaf restaurant in Kuching? One of my relatives runs the place. He married a Sarawakian lady.” She explained.

“Oh really? I only know a famous Banana leaf in Bangsar” I told her.

“How about you? You have the Punjabi look. Are you?” I asked her.

“I’m Portuguese. My father is Portuguese with French blood.”

“Oh, so you’re from Melaka? Do you go back home town often?”

“I go back during Christmas. My papa’s family side are still there.” She said.

“I’ve been staying in KL for many years.  Raised my children here. I’m a single mother. But times are hard. I’ve not been working for more than a year. My two daughters, they are having a hard time as well. Both of them are going through a divorce. So I better let them deal with their problems and not add to it.  This child, my grand daughter is one of my daughters children.  Another three boys are staying with her now.”

“In Gombak...” said the little girl

“So you’re taking care of her on your own?” I asked her.

“Yes, but my daughter gives her provisions every week.  I get social welfare allowance from the government, eighty ringgit.  But that’s hardly enough.  I haven’t paid for my DBKL rent for over a year. It’s RM120 a month.  I used to stay in Pantai Dalam flats which cost me RM500 a month. I was kicked out because I didn’t pay rent for three months. The owner came and locked me out. Now it’s the DBKL. They sent me a warning letter already.  I could be kicked out anytime now. I pray God will have mercy.  I also pray for my SOCSO claims to be approved.  That would give me RM360 a month. But they say I’m not yet eligible since I’m still 54. I can no longer work because of my leg.  I fractured my leg twice.  That’s why it’s very fragile.  I fall very easily.  On average I fall twice a day, because of my weak leg.  One is also shorter than the other. Walking is not easy” She explained.

“I came to church today hoping to meet some friends. I thought of asking a friend to lend me some money but she was not there today. All I have with me now is five ringgit” she said.

“What did you do for a living?” I asked.

“Receptionist, and front lines mostly. But They wouldn’t take me anymore because of my leg.”

“That’s ridiculous! Receptionist don’t have to move that much” I objected.

“Yes, but we still have to do some clerical work and run errands.” She explained.

“I guess you’re right”

We stopped a while at a traffic light and construction area near the center for the blinds in Brickfields.

“There are many blind people here” She said.

“Yes, the center for the blind is just there” I pointed ahead.

"Nanny, that's my school!" Said the girl pointing to the primary school at the intersection.

We passed a few churches along the way in brickfields and each time we did, she would make a cross sign on her chest.

The road came out at Little India.

“There are many rich people around here.  But they don’t really help poor people.  They say you should help the widows and the poor. We have tried going up and down these offices and all they could tell us was ‘we’ll get back to you, we’ll give you a call once we have something for you’”

“But they never did” she continued.

“Datuk Sharizat is not like that.  She helped me a lot.  She was the one who quickly helped me get the DBKL flats I’m staying in now”

“Do you know how I met her? I was working in a clinic she used to go for treatments.  I was always at the front line, making sure she gets priority and sees the doctor quick enough.  I made sure her body guards are there with her. She’s a friendly person.  One day I told her about my problem paying the costly Pantai Dalam unit and she helped me get a letter through DBKL so I could get one unit. Part of it was because I was a single mother, my age and my health.”

“But I only get RM80 a month from the welfare department.  How to survive? That’s why I’m praying very hard that I get my SOCSO claim very soon.  She promised to help. I pray every day for that. I know God will show me the way” she continued.

She reached for the rosary hanging from my rear view mirror and said "I love to see people keep Jesus in their cars.  Jesus is everything in our lives.  Always have faith in Him.  I do."

"Yes" I smiled.

“How long has your husband left you?” I aksed.

“Very long.  He’s a beater.  He beats me up when he’s not happy about anything. Now he’s married to another woman. It was my biggest mistake.  That’s why I thank God for the decision to leave him.  Our life hasn’t been easy because I didn’t earn that much as a single mother but I’m grateful to live a peaceful life” she explained.

As we entered Seri Pahang flats area, the road became very narrow because there were many cars parked by the roadside.

“This is where I stay. There are many poor people here. Some are rich though. They come here and take advantage of the cheap rent”

As I negotiate the narrow bends and cars from opposite direction, I could see cars from all  range of price. From Kancil to Mercedes. A number of Vios and City, Alza and Exora. The flats are meant for the poor but the cars parked there showed otherwise. I wondered how many poor people are deprived of a decent home here in KL.

“Do you see the house with red curtains on the second floor? That’s our house.  I put many pictures of Jesus on the walls.

Indeed, I could see three posters of Jesus outside her apartment, watching over the community.

“And Santa Clause, nanny!”  Said the girl with excitement. She’s indeed home.

Before I stopped to let them down, I asked for her phone number.

“Thank you so much Agus. God bless you. You wouldn’t have some cash to spare would you?” She asked while looking at me in the eye.

I can’t say I’m caught off guard.

I took out my wallet and said “I’ll give you ten ringgit”, taking out one of the only three red notes in my wallet

She caught a glance of my wallet and said “Oh, you have no money”

“Yes, I have no money. But you can have that ten ringgit” I told her.

“Thank you very much Agus. God bless you.  You can ask from me next time you see me at church.” She assured me.

“It’s ok. Take care of yourself, especially your leg.  And I hope your daughter comes by to visit you often.”

“She comes here every week” she said.

"Good, I'm glad to hear that" I said.

“Come my dear, say thank you to uncle” she told her granddaughter.

I waved them goodbye and drove off slowly.

I looked at the clock, almost 2pm.  I remembered I had a lunch appointment with a friend in Sungai Wang.

My mind was occupied with her story along the way.  Her motive was clear. She got my sympathy but I didn’t have a lot with me. I often don’t.  The reason I took her number was to get back to her when I was more prepared.

Or I could tell her story to others and maybe they would find it in themselves to lend a hand. They could pay her a visit and listen to her stories. Learn if she’s a genuine case or otherwise.

Whatever the case, she believes that God will show her the way.

Ask and it will be given to you.

Rango Deja Vu

I came across this poster while browsing friends' status on Facebook.
Nice poster. The movie should be great as well. It's from the people who brought Pirates of the Caribbean. And it's Johnny Depp for heaven's sake.

But I seriously had a funny feeling that I've seen this setup before...

Then I remembered my Sabah trip many weeks back... I posed for a picture in a somewhat similar manner...

Now I have all the reason in the world to watch this flick, and pronto. Gotta see if the deja vu stops at this poster or the movie connects more than just my pose, somewhat la... come on... amuse me a little will ya...

Rangoose..

Do you see the resemblance?  Come on...
Ok, the freakin' fish is much bigger... haha

English BMW

I was with a few friends over mamak for a late night supper the other day when I tried to initiate a conversation with a newcomer to the group.

His friend said he's going back to his himetown, Melaka, the next day for a one week semester break.

We were all speaking BM (Bahasa Malaysia) so I asked him "Area mana rumah awak di Melaka tu?"

His friend quickly told me "Dia lebih biasa dengan English".  I remember he told me that this new guy's BM sounds funny and it makes him uncomfortable and very shy to communicate.

"Oh, tak apa. Kami punya bahasa pun bukan bagus sangat" I told him.

"My English is ok, my BM is W", I joked.

Unfortunately, none of them quite got it and just let out a quick "haha".

One person actually asked me to repeat.

And they repeated the same "haha" after that; probably gave up trying to figure it out.

Is it that difficult to understand? Do I have to actually own a BMW to tell the joke? Should it be told while we are driving around in a BMW?

After all, my English is OK what... hehe...

Till we meet again, do keep my number...

“From Mike-My beloved dad just passed away peacefully at home in PJ”

The message came as a shock to me.

Has it been that long since I caught up with Mike?

We were dabbling in the hawker food business more than ten years ago, during my unemployed scene a few months after graduation. And five years ago I attended his wedding before he continued his four years study in Melbourne.  I haven’t got in touch with him ever since.

Mike and I were room mates during my university years in USM engineering campus (Tronoh, Perak) back then. He witnessed and assisted me in a bloody mysterious incident (click to read more) at one point during those years.

After graduation we tried to set up a stall selling Pizza, Spaghetti and Sandwiches at a coffee shop in Damansara Utama, which ironically is where my office is located now, just a few blocks away. We just managed to survive 3 months without any sign of profit. Mike had a day job and I was operating the stall at minimum wage from him and a partnering friend, also with a day job. Both of them, Mike and Chun Hoe, would manage the materials and logistics part in the background and I would run the show.  They would sometimes drop by and help out in the evening after work.  I guess we failed. But we learned a lot.

Then five years ago I attended his wedding and we managed to do a little catching up before he went off to further his studies in Melbourne.

When I changed my phone, I did not transfer his number because I assumed he would have ceased to use the number since he’s away for a long time.

Then the sad news came on Sunday.  The wake was scheduled on Monday night but I already had a dinner appointment so I decided to go for the Funeral Service followed by the cremation this morning.  The ash will be put to rest in his mother’s grave.  There was no more space at the same graveyard so the other option was a cremation, which gives one absolution; his parents are together again.

As I entered Room 6 at the memorial parlor, the priest was addressing the grieving family members and friends. Mike turned around and saw me sitting at the last row of seats. He gave me an appreciative smile and I sincerely returned a consoling one.

“As we grieve his passing, let us all remember that this is not the final goodbye.  This is just a beginning. We will all meet again…”

“He is not one to openly express his love for his family but I know he loves his two sons just as much.  He is mighty proud of them and he shows his love in his own ways…” The priest continued.

Those words sent waves of sadness onto me and tears started rolling along my eyelids.

“Before we proceed with our final respect, let us all bow down and take a brief moment to remember him…”

As I bow down, brief memories of visiting Mike at his home with his father at home came back to me.  I also remember the time when we got a catering job for a simple wedding ceremony at the church and we were scrambling to cook pizza and spaghetti at his house.  The oven and cooking stove were fired up all day long and his dad would occasionally be the food tester.  He even joked that he’s going to charge for the electricity and cooking gas.

Though brief, the memories of him got to me and I found myself burying my face with my palms, sobbing uncontrollably.

The fact that I was not with a handkerchief, a napkin or any form of fabric forced me to control my emotions and put an early stop to the crying. “I’d get my shirt wet if I go on like this…”

So I was calm again after 2 minutes.

When the service ended, the casket was ushered to the furnace just behind the room door.  As it was pushed in, sadness rained down on me yet again the floodgates were forced open.
With foggy eyes I saw the caretakers show the initial burning process and waited for a nod from mike and his elder brother to shut the furnace doors. A short prayer was said soon after and everyone walked back into the room.

As I gave Mike a hug, he let out a soft and staggered ‘Thanks for coming’ appreciation.

I also felt a finger poke at my waist. It was Chun Hoe.

“I hardly recognize you!” He said, cheering up the scene.

“Haha… you’ve never seen the fit version of him since 10 years ago” Mike told Chun Hoe.

“Yes he has. I was at your wedding remember!” I reminded Mike.

“I had already lost weight back then” I continued.
At Mike's wedding (Center)

We had our brief catch up as we lingered outside the parlor.

“Thanks for coming man. I wasn’t sure if you’re still using the number so I put my name with the message” Mike told me.

“Were you using the same number since we last met? I didn’t keep your number because I thought you’d be using a new one once you come back” I told Mike.

“Yeah, the same.”

“But how?” I asked.

“I kept reloading after every 90 days the credit expires.  Once a year I’d come home for the holidays and use up the accumulated credit”

“And you did that for four years… Wow.” I exclaimed

“It didn’t accumulate that much anyway, since I only did minimum reloads online every three months.” Mike explained.

It pays to keep old numbers sometimes.  Come to think of it, I’ve been using my number for more than ten years now.
Mike beside his father. His elder brother behind him, always.

This left feels right

I was listening to Eminem’s ‘The way you lie’ on my way to work today and the line ‘as long as this wrong feels right’ carved a smile on my face.  I never really paid any attention to the lyrics because they kinda sound angry. But then again, I wouldn’t know since I’m not really listening.  I just like the song in general, the beat and the melody.

The line lingered in my mind and it reminded me of Bon Jovi’s album called ‘This Left Feels Right’. It’s a great work of art I must add. And that eventually lead me to my natural orientation or physical condition. I’m a leftie.  Not that it’s a big deal but it did make me more conscious of how I handle things with my hands when I was a young boy growing up.

When I was in elementary school, being a leftie was not an ordinary thing.  Kids would stare at me wondering how the hell could I write in that condition. My book was always in a diagonal position at best,  45 degrees north east relative to my chest.  My friends would tilt their heads to read my page, and I would return a smile.

The act of receiving things with the left hand is frowned upon by some of my teachers throughout my schooling years.  Yes, I know it’s right to receive with the right hand but when your left feels right all the time, the concept is not that easy to grasp. The mind tells you one thing but the body is used to the other. I still do it today but hey, I don’t really care.

Eating out was a rare but joyful occasion when I was growing up.  I remember going to the morning market with mom and we would order a bowl of dry noodles each, ‘kolo mee’ to the Sarawakians, for our breakfast.  As I was enjoying my noodles with a pair of chopsticks using my left hand, I noticed several sets of senior eyes watching me at the hawker noodle stall.

“Halo apek! Lu tak pernah tengok olang pakai chopstick guna tangan kiri ah?” were the words never uttered, though I was highly tempted.

I always got confused at the dinner table, especially when there are forks involved. Which hand do I use to hold the spoon again? Because when at home, we usually use spoons only and my left hand does all the work.  Nowadays, I prefer to take both a fork and a spoon. That way, my right hand is forced to handle the spoon and the fork is used to efficiently assist the right hand with the spoon.  Oh but it get’s a little confusing when a knife is involved. But I guess it has been okay till now, since I have never felt like stabbing anyone at the dinner table, yet.

Have you ever been told “Ew, that's disgusting. You’re a leftie…  you must be cleaning yourself in the toilet and feed your  mouth using your left hand…!”

If you’re a leftie, you must have got this retarded remark at some point in your life.  I guess we’ve gotten used to it. Not that it has lead us toward depression or anything like that but it hurts all the same.

Sometimes I am tempted to reply “You stupid bitch. We’re not like you. We don’t program our hands to do certain things automatically and just forget about it and ignore where it’s been.  Here, handle this rat poison and go eat a banana leaf rice with your fingers right after”

If she’s got the brains, she’ll wash her hands thoroughly in between.

She can also be a he, a bitch as he can be.

Sorry for the angry tone. But that was fun.

Today I am proud to be a leftie.  Guess what… my boss is a leftie. My heart smiles when I see him sign letters at a horizontal position. This man goes ninety degrees.  My heart sings with joy when he signs my pay check.  Whose doesn’t eh mate?  Some of my dearest friends are also lefties. They too write at a 45 to 90 degrees tilt. There’s even a world Left Handed day, August 13th!

I am not 100% leftie though, probably just 95%.  My environment has forced me to do things with my right hand, especially the new skills I picked up over the years.  I use the scissors, click the mouse and bowl with my right hand.  I admire lefties at the bowling alley.

I use the laptop’s touch pad with my left hand, it feels better that way. I text with my left hand, it’s faster that way.  I answer calls on my left side, it goes with the left hand anyway.

And guess what, I pose for the camera with my head usually tilted to the left! Seems to me that my left side is heavier. Haha…

Heck, I could go on and on… but I won’t .  It think you, my dear readers  should be left to analyze which hand do you use in your everyday activities, especially the lefties.  And for the righties, you also use your left hand more than you think… like shifting the gear, even if you’re driving a right hand drive vehicle… haha… just kidding.

But seriously…
