A friend of mine, Diane (not her real name) recently posted a sale notice for her car up on www.mudah.my out of curiosity, since she was planning to sell the car anyway. Not long after that she got a response from someone who claims to be interested to purchase. She did not pay attention initially because she thought it was just out of curiosity as well. As the same person came knocking a few times so she thought she give it a go.
The buyer told her that he would make payment through PayPal and Diane agreed because she already has a verified account with PayPal. He asked for her PayPal account e-mail and she gladly furnished it. The price she put for the car was RM35,000.00 and there was no negotiation or haggling from the buyer. And the best thing was he didn’t mind not being able to view the car because he claims to be out at sea in Bermuda. Before she knew it, the buyer had already initiated the transfer to her PayPal account and swiftly got an e-mail from PayPal telling her that RM35,000 plus a shipment cost of RM4,000 was in transit, pending further instruction on completing the transaction.
Wow. What a generous buyer. No haggling and still cared to pay for the shipment cost. He won’t even view the car!
The next mail from PayPal told her to make use of the RM4,000 and pay it to the designated courier company in order for them to collect the car from her. The only problem is that the money is still in transit. This ultimately means that she would have to use her own money first to pay the courier company upfront so they can collect the car and verify that the transaction is genuine and Diane can get her RM35,000.00 for the car sold.
Diane was troubled by this predicament and asked around in facebook if anyone has experience with PayPal transactions.
I responded “I have a PayPal account but never used. Care to donate? I’ll give you a link”
Soon I got a call from Diane and she told me her story. I told her this whole scene smells fishy and asked her to forward me all the e-mails so I could study the matter further.
Here are the e-mails from the buyer and PayPal;

Now it doesn’t take a commercial crime investigator to smell the scam.
I asked if she logged in to her PayPal account to monitor any transactions and she said there was nothing shown throughout her account. No transaction whatsoever. I told her if there was any suspension of any amount, it will definitely be shown in the account details. I also told her to monitor her account for the next few days to see if there are any incoming or pending payment and transactions.
After all is said and done, I told her to ignore everything else after this and get on with life. It seems that they are only interested to speed up the shipping process which involves RM4000. Not the condition of the car, not the value of the sale and not even the RM35,000 that has changed hands despite the fact that it is invisible.
“If the buyer insists that his money has been deducted and demands for a refund, just tell him that there is nothing shown in your account, therefore there is no proof of any transaction, only e-mail conversations, which are as good as verbal rubbish. Tell him that unless you see RM35,000 floating in your account, you're not doing anything. Period! Check all e-mail you’ve received from PayPal and pay attention to the address. I don’t think I’ve ever received any mail from Europe-Paypal. Heck I can also tell you that I have transferred RM4000 to your account and demand that you give me back; if you haven’t seen the transaction it means that the transfer is pending, so use your money first la… boleh?” I told her.
FYI, www.europe-paypal.com is not even a complete website…. Please lah…
There are so many ways for people to cheat these days and RM4000 is a lot of money. Not four, not forty nor four hundred.
“If he keeps harassing you, just report the case to the police. They would have enough lead based on the valid bank account and name to start an investigation” I told her.
“If you are curious and adventurous enough, and think it’s worth your time, do ask for the Courier agent’s phone number and dig for more information” I added.
And she did. She got the agent’s number and called her. She asked for the agent’s address and she asked back “Why?”
Diane told her RM4000 is a lot of money and she wants to hand it to her personally, therefore she wants an office address. Guess what the agent said; their office is in Seremban. And Diane said “Well and good! I know Seremban like the back of my hand!
The agent paused for a long while, then told Diane that she would e-mail the address soon… but till now Diane got nothing.
“I guess they know I know…” Diane updated me.
My local credit card has been hacked by someone in Malaysia. Luckily that person did not do so much transaction. My mum called me about the matter & I asked her to cancel my account as she's the only person the bank can recognize. Bloody hell this local bank. They did not beef up their security system. And the best part, I was in the States when the transaction was done!!! Serve them right
ReplyDeletegosh what a scam. Scary. How can some one buy car without inspecting the car,
ReplyDeleteJeez man. I hope these people burn in hell
ReplyDeleteIt's really scary if your fren really got scammed, but this buyer's generosity sounds too good to be true lol.. One would always ask for pictures of an item as expensive as cars @.@ They really do work hard in scamming swt

Thank you. My suspicions have been confirmed. I've been trying to sell a bathroom suite. In response to "David Dawn's" desire to conclude via PayPal I raised a PayPal money request. When i received an email purporting to be from intl.paypal.co.uk using a very different font and some basic spelling errors. I have contacted PayPal directly and am awaiting a response. My next email will be to David Dawn telling him to take his money and take a hike.
ReplyDeleteI got exactly the same. same format,i'm selling some fornitures. belgart waldemar the buyer ask to deliver theoretically to UK. the buyer is a marine engineer so limited in actions. he/she sent me the fake Paypal payment plus a 550 euro for delivery expenses, asking me to pay the 550 delivery expenses via Western Union to:

ReplyDeleteI got two answers like that when I was selling my car. From paul.melanie19 and from mitreahammond101@hotmail.com.
Not a word about all the necessary paperwork when exporting a car to another country! Just about the paypal-transaction and shipping.
I also heard about people who put out a fake add so that someone else payed the same ammont to another seller, who then delivered the car to the criminal.
paul.melanie19@gmail.com strikes again.
ReplyDeletee-mails in progress.
Thank God for this blog post
paul.melanie19 is still working!!! attention!!! I'm selling a car in Croatia, he contacted me and said that he is marine engineer and now is in Ireland and the car goes to United States, yeah wright, rubbish, rubbish!!!

This just happened to me! I got a text message about someone wanting the truck I have for sale for their father. The number I was texted from was 202-681-3158. Washington DC. It was the exact same scam!!!
ReplyDeleteI recently had a request from jtatham111@gmail.com for a very similar scam. It was in fairly good English and at a normal time of day however the western union transfer demand was a give away. Why would anyone pay money to the buyer for anything whatsoever?!
ReplyDeleteI also received an email from service@paypal.co.uk (paypproof@secureroot.com) which actually originated from debzy007@gmail.com which claimed that I owed the courier the money. I reckon this debyz007@gmail.com is actually their own personal account.

Thank you for the sharing. Very helpful. I experienced the same.
ReplyDeleteThanks, this just kept me from sending my computer to Nigeria. PayPal scam that I wanted to trust but glad I could read about it here.
ReplyDeletealso avoid dealing with this guy: prasadsantos101@gmail.com, he tried to do this scam by 'buying' my car from abroad (I live in Poland, he claimed to be on a sea and the 'delivery agency' was USA address: Agent Name : Julie Harb
ReplyDeleteCity: Franklin
State: Virginia
Zip code: 23851
Country: USA).
I was supposed to send cash for 'delivery service' in order for the scammer bank to unblock the money he sent me. Email from the 'bank':
From: s.mark334@gmail.com on behalf of Lloyds TSB Bank® (unitdept@secureroot.com)
Hope that helps, be carefull while selling expensive stuff!
Thanks man! This helps a lot. A friend of mine called me to see if the offer he got to sell his car was too good to be true. Alas, it's the same s.mark334@gmail.com....

Am really satisfied in buying your AD.I'm ready to pay your asking price rm15k including the PayPal transfer charges,How i wish i could come to inspect this item but currently i'm working away from the country... But the issue is i am an oceanographer and i do have a contract now so am presently on sea.The contract is strictly no call due to the lack of reception on the sea area. ReplyDeleteGot these mail after posting on mudah.my. Thanks for sharing - these are cons: s.mark334@gmail.com and mkonorsiah@gmail.com.
ReplyDeleteMail body from them
Am presently in united kingdom so I can not come to test the vehicle
but if you are very sure the vehicle is in good condition tell me the
final price you want to sell the vehicle because am sending vehicle to
my husband who is based in myamar, so I will arrange a pick up agent to
collect the vehicle from you after you have received the payment made
to you. And the pick up agent fee will be included in the payment made
to your account so that you can pay them for the service when they
come to collect the vehicle from you also the pick up agent will
prepare all documents regards the change of ownership and shipping the
vehicle to the new owner as all these fees will be included in the
pick up agent fees made to you, so I want you to get back to me with
the final price of the vehicle then we can proceed with the
transaction. Thanks hope to hear from you soon.
